Aging & Alone: Asian American living alone in New York City
AARP, in collaboration with NextDayBetter, presents "Aging & Alone" - a powerful story following the day in the life of Mrs. Chu, a Chinese American senior that lives alone in New York City. Our challenge: "how might we end social isolation among seniors?" More than half of all seniors aged 75+ in the United States live alone. Living in isolation without strong support significantly raises the risk of injury and illness. Seniors in the Asian American Pacific Islander community are especially vulnerable, often facing the added burdens of poverty and language barriers. To learn more about ending social isolation, please visit Connect2Affect powered by AARP Foundation at https://connect2affect.org/ Thank you to Hamilton-Madison House for supporting this story. Hamilton-Madison House is a non-profit settlement house established in 1898 to improve the quality of life for NYC. It operates senior centers in Chinatown/Lower East Communities with 5,000+ members citywide offer health, social and nutritional services to seniors over 62. Imam of Harlem: On Being Black & Muslim in America | #BHeard
For over twenty years, Imam Talib 'Abdur-Rashid has ran Harlem’s Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood (MIB); and for twenty years he has provided a religious sanctuary for its predominantly African-American congregation, who have increasingly felt the weight of being both Muslim and black in America. African-Americans make up the largest segment of Muslims living in the country, about 40 percent, yet they’ve been alienated from conversations on combating anti-Muslim sentiments. In this piece, we get a glimpse into how Imam Talib is continuing the legacy of Malcolm X in protests and sermons, we hear about some of the most pressing issues that face his community, and we learn about how a united Muslim community can help fight religious discrimination, and defend civil rights at a time when they are increasingly coming under attack. -- This video is from BRIC TV— the first 24/7 television channel created by, for, and about Brooklyn. 'Christian patrols' in London's Muslim areas: Help or troublemakers?
It's not just the police out on patrol in London these days. There are Jewish patrol cars from the 'Shomrim' security group who're getting in on the act. And there are also Islamic Sharia patrols, who are locking horns with firebrand Christian patrols. These are known occasionally to cause trouble. They became more active after the siege at the Kosher store in Paris. RT's Harry Fear caught up with one of their members. Muslim Patrol Battles Bloods: New Turf Rivalry in Brooklyn (David Wood)
The Muslim Community Patrol in New York recently assaulted a teenaged boy for insulting a Muslim woman outside Siraj Wahhaj's Masjid Taqwa in Brooklyn. Unfortunately for the Muslim Patrol, the teenager was the son of a high-ranking member of the Bloods (a violent street gang). A group of Bloods soon showed up at the mosque for a confrontation, but police showed up and dispersed the groups. One of the Bloods, however, vowed that the conflict wasn't over. Will we see more conflicts like this due to the rise of Islamic Sharia patrols? David Wood discusses the issue.
